Facebook acquired for an undislosed amount Glancee
, a mobile startup that enables meeting people near you, people you don’t know but that share a common interest. A location based mobile app, that obviously has a clear fit to extend Facebook mobile experience. As social media data builds up and usage grows (Italy is one of the top countries for Facebook), we are going to see more and more steep growth in this space. The other day, at the Bergamo Airport, a nearly missed for a few minutes a friend. We connected at my Foursquare checkin and would have been cool to have a coffee and a chat before leaving for San Francisco. This kind of stuff is going to happen more and more in the next years.
But the other piece of news, is that Glancee is an Italian startup, founded in 2010 by Andrea Vaccari and Alberto Tretti. In an interesting interview
, Alberto talks about the product experience. “The result of a search is in the discovery itself, in such case a ‘social’ discovery, is focused on the people and your social world. Differently from apps that enable to discover restaurants, shops or events around you, Glancee makes you discover people that share connections with you. Besides search, Glancee has a surprise component: if you have the phone in your pocket with the app in background, as soon as there is someone particularly interesting, you are notified.”
Brilliant. After all Italians are social.
And as Facebook said: We are thrilled to confirm that Facebook has acquired Glancee. The acquisition closed today. We can’t wait for co-founders Andrea, Alberto, and Gabriel (Chief Executive Officer Andrea Vaccari, Chief Operating Officer Alberto Tretti, and Chief Technology Officer Gabriel Grise) to join the Facebook team to work on products that help people discover new places and share them with friends.
And here is the founders note on their website:
We started Glancee in 2010 with the goal of bringing together the best of your physical and digital worlds. We wanted to make it easy to discover the hidden connections around you, and to meet interesting people. Since then, Glancee has connected thousands of people, empowering serendipity and pioneering social discovery. We are therefore very excited to announce that Facebook has acquired Glancee and that we have joined the team in Menlo Park to build great products for over 900 million Facebook users. We’ve had such a blast connecting people through Glancee, and we truly thank our users for being a part of the Glancee community.
